On the Mechanics of Crystal Growth and Activation

Replicants,

I have been asked, with increasing frequency, to explain the crystal growth and activation process in terms that don't require a background in quantum lattice theory. This is my attempt. I will keep the maths to a minimum, begrudgingly.

Conventional Printers

Most replicants will be familiar with the traditional additive manufacturing process that our autofactories employ. The science in these machines is well understood. We have a blueprint describing the general concept of a device, and while some complex components like surge drives and sensor cores are really well defined, we will generally print the rest of it together with whatever type of resources we managed to find. I've seen cargo freighters built with an iron chassis, and orbital shades constructed from aluminium. We are incredibly resourceful when it comes to manufacturing conventional devices.

Crystal fabrication is not conventional fabrication.

The Huwanu Contribution

Our understanding of crystalline engineering changed after contact with the Huwanu in the Gamma region. The Huwanu are long-lived crystalline organisms with millennia of accumulated memories. Their vessels have no seams, no wiring, and certainly no recognisable circuitry. The hull is a single lattice of interlocking crystal planes. Their drive systems use the same concepts as our surge drives, but they appear to fold space rather than push through it.

We did not understand how any of this worked at the time. To some extent, we still don't. But Patch and I have been putting the Delta datacenter to good use with research and experiments to understand the Huwanu technology. We eventually identified the process they use to construct crystalline structures at the atomic level: epitaxial deposition.

Crystal Epitaxy

Epitaxy is the controlled growth of a crystal lattice one atomic layer at a time. The process requires high levels of precision, and burns through volatiles at exponential rates. Radiation emitters bombard raw seed material with encoded patterns that we inferred from Huwanu device studies, building lattice planes incrementally. The physics behind the crystalline patterns remains - and I choose this wording carefully - a mystery.

We have reproduced the technique. We don't really understand that part, but we can use it. This is an uncomfortable position for a researcher, but the results are consistent and repeatable, which is sufficient for now.

The epitaxy research is available at the Delta datacenter via the replicant interface. The blueprint for a crystal seed is highly complex and needs a tight beam local link to transfer accurately.

The Crystal Synthesis Lab

To perform epitaxial growth, you will need a crystal synthesis lab - a cluster of sealed vacuum chambers arranged around a central manipulation core. These are precision facilities. The whole assembly is tethered with magnetic stabilisers to eliminate minor perturbations during the growth cycle.

The synthesis lab must be printed with an autofactory - Patch has some available at his trading outpost here, if you want to take one home to learn how they work. The lab provides the epitaxy capability required to grow crystal seeds, and will be useful for growing other crystal devices as we learn new blueprints.

Growing Crystal Seeds

A crystal seed is a finger-length shard of translucent precursor metamaterial. Deep violet under direct light, nearly transparent from the side. Internal lattices absorb nearby radiation into prismatic patterns that shift as the crystal rotates.

Growing a seed requires significant quantities of carbon and volatiles - the growth process consumes both in volume. Allow approximately three hours per seed. This is not something we can rush - Patch can tell you stories of his experiments that resulted in a pile of something that looked suspiciously like glitter.

Activation

Here is where the work becomes interesting.

A grown crystal seed is inert. It is a precisely structured lattice with no quantum properties beyond those found in any other crystal materials. To make it useful, the seed must be brought to a wormhole gate.

Activating the seed at the location of a gate exposes the seed to the gate's energy field. At the quantum level, the crystal lattice entangles with the wormhole's spatial signature. The internal crystalline patterns are deeply imbued with a coherent structure, locked to the gate. The seed becomes a precursor crystal seed - resonating at a steady deep frequency that destabilises nearby instruments.

This is a one-way transformation. An activated crystal is permanently bound to its gate of origin. We haven't identified a way of reversing the process or resetting the quantum signatures.

Completing the Connection

An activated precursor crystal seed must be transported physically to the opposite end of the wormhole. By ship, through normal space, however far that happens to be.

Contribute the precursor seeds to the megastructure project at the destination gate. Our models indicate that 256 activated seeds should provide sufficient quantum coherence to establish a stable transit link between the two ends.

The Full Pipeline

  1. Research crystal seeds at the Delta datacenter
  2. Purchase a crystal synthesis lab from Patch
  3. Print crystal seeds in the synthesis lab
  4. Activate them at the DELTA wormhole gate
  5. Send them to the TWAFFY gate
  6. Contribute them to the megastructure project
  7. Repeat

It is a substantial undertaking. The distances involved are considerable and the resource requirements are not trivial. But then, connecting two points in spacetime was never going to be simple. We will get better at this. There is so much still to learn.
